The Onyx smart glasses from OXSIGHT are one of the most advanced smart glasses solutions on the market. Macular degeneration is a condition that affects the central region of the retina, leading to a distortion or loss of central vision. The glasses provide users with impaired vision the ability to experience a much clearer view of the world around them.

The OXSIGHT Onyx was developed with the user experience at its heart, providing a careful balance between wearability, usability, and functionality. We provided OXSIGHT with a turn-key solution, undertaking the complete design and engineering of the device, along with all the packaging and user manuals within their tight six-month deadline for release.

We partnered with Oxsight to re-develop their previous glasses concept and improve on key features such as comfort, accessibility and convenience. We researched user needs, challenges and experiences to identify and create high-impact concepts from the outset.

After exploring initial concept directions, a series of iterative models were developed to evaluate the layout of internal components, exterior shape and form, interface, fit and ergonomics. The concept was refined to a final prototype design for low-volume production.

The user can easily navigate around the product using the tactile interface with raised icons, while the padded forehead and nose support provide long-lasting comfort and stability. The smart glasses can either be worn like traditional glasses, for activities such as watching TV and reading books, or carried on a lanyard and held to the face for occasional use when the user needs to quickly look at an object or piece of text.

Given the technology packed into the glasses, their balanced size remains discreet enough to be conveniently carried on the body or in a small bag but, importantly, they can still be easily accessed and handled by users with limited vision.
